I always recommend that you wear something classic, comfortable and simple, so that your pictures don’t date. Brands, patterns and motifs go in and out of fashion often so please bear this in mind when choosing your outfit.
Wearing colours that coordinate will always look best – if one outfit stands out from the others they will stand out in your portraits too. If you’re unsure what to wear, or on the other hand have a specific style you would like to discuss please get in touch and I will be happy to help advise.

One of the benefits of having a photo shoot is that you have lots of different images to choose from. If you’re unable to choose which image you like best, why not opt for a montage. Simply pick your favourite photos from the shoot and we’ll combine them in one frame.
A montage is also a great way to capture the fun from the day. Putting together several images in one frame can really showcase lots of different emotions and expressions at once. It’s also a great way to have different family members all together in one frame.
If you need any help choosing which images will work, or would like to see how they look in different layouts please let me know and we can work together to create the perfect wall art for you. I provide a full wall art service, with specialist framing, fine art prints, stretched canvas. Take a look at the MONTAGE GALLERY if you would like some inspiration.

Watch Them Grow price is £125
Please note, newborn photo shoots are usually taken between 6 to 21 days after birth for best results. Appointments will be accepted after but results can vary.

I suggest booking your photo shoot before baby arrives.
Upon booking I pencil you in around your due date, and 2 weeks either side. Although the booking is completely flexible.
The best time to capture those posed sleepy baby images is 6-21 days old. However, I have photographed many newborn babies much older and still had great results.
Having a baby is not set by the clock or the calendar they come when they want and it’s important that you feel ready to venture out. So although you’re booked in it’s not set in stone. Both of my children were 11 days late, and we spent several days in hospital before coming home so I know first-hand it doesn’t always go to plan.
-
I allow 2-3 hours for newborn photo shoots. Sometimes they may take an hour or sometimes they may take 3. It’s always governed by baby and their needs during the shoot. I allow plenty of time for feeds, nappy changes etc so that the shoot is a relaxed experience.
Throughout the photo shoot I offer refreshments so you can relax, take a comfortable seat and enjoy that rare chance to have a hot cup of tea or coffee!
I always suggest giving baby a full feed before you arrive, so that when we change them ready for the session we are topping up rather than starting from empty! Newborns are usually sleepy after their feed. This enables us to take some lovely shots whilst they are relaxed.
I have a wardrobe of newborn outfits, head bands and different backdrops for you to choose from or you are welcome to bring your own outfits.
Feeding by breast of bottle, changing your baby, accidents on you and me is all part of it. I allow plenty of time for all eventualities. It is important to me that you are comfortable and relaxed in the studio environment as if you’re not relaxed your baby is likely to pick up on that.
Photographs can be done with parents at the same time. Please let me know in advance if you wish to do this. If you would like to involve siblings in the photo shoot, please bare-in mind it can be a long time for them whilst we capture the newborn solo photos. If possible, it’s recommended that they join us part way through the shoot so that they don’t have to wait too long.
Please don’t worry if your baby doesn’t sleep, usually with a full tummy and a warm relaxed environment we get baby settled ready for some sleepy shots. However, if they don’t then I will be sure to capture some beautiful shots of baby awake.
If you would like to discuss booking a newborn photo shoot please GET IN TOUCH and I will be happy to help.

Yourself, baby, feeds (more than you would expect to need just in case), change of clothes, nappies, wipes. Feel free to bring anything that makes you or baby feel most comfortable.
I do suggest bringing a dummy even if you are not routinely using one as it can be helpful in achieving the best poses during your session.
With underfloor heating the studio is always warm so that baby is comfortable throughout the shoot. It’s best that you wear layers so you can keep cool and comfortable.
I have a wardrobe of newborn outfits, head bands, accessories for you to choose from. You are welcome to bring your own too. Sometimes people like to include sentimental or personal items, which we can incorporate into your photo shoot.
-
Your baby is the star of the shoot and their comfort is my priority at all times. If your baby is due a feed, fast asleep, needs a nappy change or simply won’t settle, none of this is a problem.
When photographing newborns there is no pressure I want the session to be an enjoyable and memorable occasion.
-
For many people pets are part of the family so are most welcome for photo shoots. Please let me know when booking your appointment if you wish to bring your pet with you. This is so that I can ensure the studio is set up appropriately and time is allowed for cleaning.
Prior to focusing on photography I was a trained veterinary nurse, and as an animal owner myself I have a flexible and patient approach when it comes to photographing your pets.
Please remember that bookings are by appointment only. If you have any further questions that I haven’t covered in the FAQ’s please GET IN TOUCH.

Following your visit to Studio 5 we will arrange a separate appointment to come back and view your edited gallery of images. Your photographs can be deeply emotive, capturing memories so precious they often bring tears during your slideshow. That kind of feeling simply can’t be replicated by logging into an online gallery.
On completion of your order I can create a gallery right here so you can share it with family and friends.
Simply click on the CLIENTS link and enter your password. If you have forgotten your password or need any assistance viewing your images please get in touch and I will be happy to help.

My interest in photography began when I travelled the world back in 2009. I enjoyed taking photographs of people living in the moment and enjoying their travel experiences. When I returned home to Cumbria, I wanted to continue creating memorable photographs for people. So, I began by setting up in my local community centre around my day job. With the support of friends, family, and loyal customers, this went very well, and I decided to invest in a home-based photography studio right here in Carlisle.
That was when Studio 5 was born, at number 5 Beck Rd, Carlisle CA2 7QL
In 2017 we welcomed our little girl, Eva Ray into the family, followed by our second baby Toby in 2019. With a growing family came the need for a bigger home. So, we set about an extension which also gave me the perfect opportunity to build a new and improved photography studio.
Having my own children only enhanced my passion for capturing special moments on camera. I look forward to helping you do the same.

“We went to Joanne this week for a newborn photoshoot and it was our first outing with a newborn baby. Joanne not only skillfully captured beautiful photos of our baby, but she also made what could have been a stressful experience into a really positive and relaxed one. She bent over backwards to make us feel welcome and comfortable and had plenty of flexibility for the unpredictable nature of babies. We immediately felt at ease and safe there, and our baby was in expert hands. We're already excited to return with a 6-month-old as we purchased the 'Watch Them Grow' package! Thank you Joanne!”
